Layouts and Regions

In response to feedback from previous years, we have regionalized the layouts into two geographical areas.  Because some of North Carolina's operating layouts are spread out over an area that would require 2-3 hour drive times, we have grouped layouts into Eastern and Western tours this year.

Participants can now sign up for layouts in either region (or both), which allows them the choice of having shorter or longer drive times.

The Eastern Region will include layouts in the Raleigh/Durham and Greensboro areas.

The Western Region will include layouts in the Charlotte Metro area, stretching north and west up I-77 toward Yadkinville and west toward Hickory.

Maximum drive times between layouts within regions are being kept in the 60 to 90 minute range depending on traffic.

There is no official motel for the event, so it would be best to pick accomodations that put attendees close to the layouts they will be operating on.

A brief description of the host railroads is shown below.  More detailed descriptions can be found under the tab for the corresponding regions.

Western Region - includes Charlotte metro area, Statesville, Yadkinville, Hickory area

Charleston, Roanoke & Eastern Railway - N Scale - Marcus Neubacher's CR&E represents a proto-freelanced division of Norfolk Southern set in the late 80's/early 90's era.  A CTC-controlled mainline and dark coal branch line provides for coal train and merchandise train operations, as well as local freights. The CR&E draws influences from the N&W, the Southern, and the Clinchfield.

Charleston, Roanoke & Eastern - Marcus Neubacher

Chessie System Thomas Subdivision - HO Scale - Andrew Stitt is modeling the former Western Maryland Thomas Subdivision from Keyser, WV, through Elkins to Durbin and Laurel Bank.  The railroad features heavy coal tonnage as well as merchandise and local trains, but is unique in that it does not represent a high density line.  This is a new railroad for NC Rail Run!

Clinchfield Railroad North End - HO Scale - Marty Talley's double-decked Clinchfield Railroad is based in 1970 and features heavy coal-hauling operations and time freights.  In addition to mainline running, the CRR includes extensive branch line operations.  This is a new railroad for NC Rail Run!

KK&L Railroad - HO Scale - Neal Anderson's railroad is an "anything goes" hauler of traffic from north to south in a 1500 square foot space.  Steels mill operations, passenger trains, and a long mainline run take place on this layout loosely set in the 1950's-1970's.

Lehigh & Hudson River Railway - N Scale - Larry Keller's railroad is a bridge line to and from New England, bypassing New York City.  Traffic is a mix of various through trains and locals, with timetable and train order operations based on the L&HR circa 1967.

Lehigh & Hudson River - Larry Keller

New York Central Piney Fork Branch - HO Scale - Seth Gartner's railroad models the movement of coal from tipples in Eastern Ohio north to Cleveland, as well as north/south movements of merchandise trains.  The railroad is set in the mid 1960's.

NYC Piney Fork Branch - Seth Gartner

Norfolk Southern Pocahontas District - N Scale - Scott Teague's railroad is a a prototype-inspired heavy duty coal-hauling railroad set in the modern era.  Time freights, intermodal trains, and pusher operations add to the traffic on this busy railroad that features both mainline and branchline territory.

NS Pocahontas District - Scott Teague

Piedmont & Western Railway - HO Scale - Jack Parker's P&W is a coal-hauling bridge route set in the mountains of West Virginia, Virginia, and North Carolina.  The era is the steam-to-diesel transition period, and the route sees general freights, locals, coal traffic, and passenger trains.  The railroad occupies two buildings and has the distinction of being our longest-operating railroad.

Eastern Region - includes Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area, Greensboro area

Atlantic Coast Line Spartanburg Division - N Scale - Dave Koss's railroad is a semi-fictitious single-track rail line between Wilmington, NC, and Spartanburg, SC.  It is set in 1967 and features interchange with the Clinchfield Railroad at Spartanburg.

CSXT Shenandoah Division - N Scale - Bruce Faulkner's railroad is a prototype-freelanced trunk route with a lot of freight and coal traffic.  It is heavily based on the former Clinchfield route of CSX and represents a typical southeastern blend of traffic that includes through trains, shifters, and some passenger trains.  It is set in the 1986-1992 timeframe.

East Tennessee & Western North Carolina Railroad - On30 - Steve Benezra's railroad is a reasonably accurate representation of the narrow-gage ET&WNC that includes most of the cities, towns, and industries along the real "Tweetsie."  The railroad is set in 1920 between Johnson City, TN, and Boone, NC.

Penn Central Lehigh & Delaware Division - N Scale - Michael Pennie's railroad is set in June 1970 in northeast New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania.  It features heavy industry, including steel, anthracite, and cement traffic on both a single track and double track CTC railroad.
